Additional Compensation for latest power cuts

Please see statement below from Basil Scarsella about additional compensation for the recent power outages.

Statement from UK Power Networks CEO Basil Scarsella

I appreciate what a difficult time this is, for our many customers who have experienced a power cut caused by Storm Eunice which saw record wind speeds and damage across the South East and East of England.

While we work hard to get everybody back on supply, we have decided to make goodwill payments to our customers who were worst affected by power cuts caused by Storm Eunice and have been without power for 24 hours.

We recognise that being without power for this extended period affects your daily life so we have decided to make an extra £50 payment, earlier than payments would normally apply which would be after 48 hours.  This means that if you were impacted by Storm Eunice you will be eligible to receive £50 after 24 hours without electricity, an additional £70 when you reach 48 hours, and an additional £70 thereafter for every 12 hours without power.

There is no need for you to call us – we’ll contact everyone who is entitled to a payment by text message, email or letter in the coming days. If you prefer you can fill in our online claim form.

I hope you and your families are safe and well. Please rest assured it’s our top priority to get your power back on as quickly as we can.

Basil Scarsella

Memorial Bench for Gwen and Peter Westwood

Gwen and Peter Westwood were at the heart of the Dallington community for many, many years – running the Post Office Stores.
Their granddaughter, Emma, very generously donated this beautiful bench to Dallington in their memory.  The perfect gift for us all, including those who did not know Gwen and Peter, to sit and remember what is precious to us.

Police advice on increasing farm break-ins

Sussex Police have advised us that they starting to see some farms being broken into again.  They have asked all to be alert and take measures to protect property.

  • Take several photographs, from different angles, especially any unique markings.
  • Take notes of your serial and chassis numbers.
  • Fit an immobiliser/tracker.
  • Use clamps, locks and alarms.
  • Keep machinery out of sight and locked away using as many barriers as possible.
  • Keep gates closed, locked and alarmed where able.
  • Mark your property, make it unique and easy to identify.  Serial/chassis numbers are often scratched off, if the Police recover items it can be difficult to return an item if it is generic.
  • If you have had machinery stolen before, try to keep it in a different location, thieves know that you will replace it as you need it for your work, so they will most likely return and they already know the layout of your land.
  • If you have security posters, move them around frequently, people only notice them for around 3 months, moving them shows you are alert to your security.
  • Lighting – thieves don’t like lighting as it draws attention.
  • CCTV – ideally cameras that are linked to your phone can alert you to the fact that someone is breaking into your property and you can call the Police immediately.
  • Don’t leave your keys in the ignition.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the Police, theives often scope the area beforehand.
  • Making as many barriers as possible increases the time and effort it takes for someone to steal your equipment.
